	Because alcohol can affect people in different ways there is no amount of alcohol that can be said to be safe for everyone. People choosing to drink must realise that there will always be some risk to their health and social well-being and as such must take personal responsibility for minimising these risks. 	Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can greatly affect the growth and development of the unborn child. Drinking is strongly discouraged during pregnancy because it can cause a number of physical and mental anomalies in a baby, including foetal alcohol syndrome.
Legal Drinking Age
	The legal drinking age in Japan is 20 years. It is an offence to sell to or obtain liquor on behalf of a person under the age of 20 years. ※お酒は20歳を過ぎてから ※未成年の飲酒は法律で禁じられています。※未成年の方への販売は出来ません。
Driving Limits ※お酒を飲んで車を運転することは出来ません
	The legal limit for drinking and driving in Japan is measured differently and is significantly lower than that in Australia and many other parts of the world. Measured by the amount of alcohol per litre of exhaled breath (rather than blood alcohol) the legal limit is 0.15mg/l. The Australian legal drink driving limit is .05% blood alcohol which converts to .25mg/l on the Japanese measure. 0.15mg/l breath alcohol equates to approximately .03% blood alcohol.
Penalties
	Japan imposes severe penalties to deter drink-driving. These penalties apply to drivers, those serving drivers and those travelling as passengers.
